Herbal tea: Vervain

Verveine is actually the French name for the plant we know as vervain or lemon verbena. In science the Latin name is always used, the reason is that everyone knows it is about the same plant. There are many different names for this plant, so the Latin name of verbena is used ‘Verbena Officinalis’. The word ‘verbena’ means ‘venus herb’. This word actually consists of the two words ‘veneris’ and ‘herba’. These words mean ‘from venus’ and ‘herb’. The name ‘Officinialis’ means ‘of the place where the pharmacist works’. In the past, all medicinal herbs were given this addition when they were on the official medicinal plant list.
The lemon verbena leaf strengthens the nerves and is therefore also soothing. The substances that verbena possesses are generally not identifiable in very large quantities. Yet the effect is unmistakable, partly due to the synergistic of mutually reinforcing effect of the ingredients.

The tea has a fresh citrus flavour and is good for digestion, among other things. Verbena tea is a moment of indulgence, especially after a meal of before going to sleep. The herbaceous plant comes from the vervain family. The plant contains essential oils with the aroma of lemon. You will also find the same aroma in the lemon itself, lemongrass and orange. This herb has also many different positive effects on the human body.

Vervain is an anti-inflammatory herb due to the iridoid glycosides it contains. In addition, it has both a pain-killing effect as a nerve pain-killing effect. Rheumatic conditions are accompanied by edemen or fluid retention.

Vervain is a diuretic that removes the edemen that cause gout and arthritis and can therefore be used when you have rheumatic pain, gout and/or arthritis.

Verbena can also be used for external use. Make the tea and let it cool down to a lukewarm temperature. Dab a cloth in the tea and use it. Verbena has an astringent effect which makes wounds heal faster. It is also a haemostatic so that wounds can start the healing process more quickly. The blood circulation is also stimulated. With all these points you can use it for scrapes, cuts and burns, inflammation of the gums, sore throat, canker sores, but also for eczema, sores, bruises and nerve pain.
